The newly returned game show You Bet! saw competitors reaching for their board game collection, but do you think you could do the same?
Board games are being seen more and more frequently on TV – no longer relegated to the likes of Big Bang Theory, we're seeing Wingspan in the background of soaps and D&D on the silver screen. It was still a surprise to see board games featuring on You Bet this weekend though, with contestants seemingly attempting the impossible...
You Bet!
You Bet is a TV program broadcast on ITV, originally running for around ten years before airing it's last episode in 1997. It was a staple of ITV for some time, initially hosted by Bruce Forsyth, before handing over to Matthew Kelly and then Darren Day. The series was brought back for a tiny two episode return, hosted by Holly Willoughby and Steven Mulhern. The show is described as one which sees ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges, with a grand prize of £10,000.
Within the game, celebrities bet on the abilities players claim to have – this could be incredible speed, strength, memory, or even your sense of smell, taste or hearing, that may seem impossible – alongside the studio audience. The most popular contestant at the end will win £10,000, and the most incorrect celebrity will face a forfeit.
Board Games on TV in You Bet!
The episode that saw board games making their star appearance had celebrities Rob Beckett, Alison Hammond, Harry Redknap and Rosie Ramsey as their panel, and over 75 minutes saw a range of unusual events. There was a digger driver who bet he could set off suspended from the ceiling fireworks on two wheels, another who bet they could scale the outside of a multi-story carpark quicker than it was possible to drive to the top, and more.
A teacher duo Parsan and Damian claimed to be able to identify board games just by the sound of the components falling out of the box – a bet we invite you to test at home! The VT showed off an impressive selection of board games in their collection – they claim around 600 games live in their collection at home, though, it was 50 that were brought to ITV studios, and then five they had to identify them from.

The games on the list were an interesting mix – as you can bet we paused to check them out! – hobby games like Nunatak, Aqualin, 7 Wonders, Ticket to Ride, HeroQuest, Catch the Moon, Bitoku, Kahuna, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Catan, Imhotep, Mysterium, Cities, Planet, and Trekking Through History, all made the cut, but alongside typical audience friendly options – Monopoly was shown off a fair amount, The Game of Life, Cluedo, etc.
The pair were the final bet of the night, with all celebrities but Rob Beckett voting that it could be done, and 75% of the audience agreeing.
They were tasked with recognising four of the five games, beginning with Guess Who, then 7 Wonders, Block Ness (wrong), Perudo, The Adventures of Robin Hood. They passed on 7 Wonders initially, got Block Ness wrong, but answered the others correctly – meaning they won their challenge.
Ultimately the pair didn't win the big prize at the end, they've certainly shown themselves to have a decent collection of games – something we can all be proud of!
