Cluedo movie remake could be scripted by Deadpool writers, star Ryan Reynolds

A new movie based on murder-mystery classic Cluedo is in the works, and it’s apparently attracted the team responsible for foul-mouthed superhero flick Deadpool.

Clue – as the game is known over in the US – is said to be in development as the first film in a three-year deal between 20th Century Fox and Maximum Effort, the studio founded by actor Ryan Reynolds, according to Deadline.

Reynolds, who played Deadpool in the hugely successful X-Men spin-off, has also signed on as one of the upcoming film’s stars, although it’s not clear who he’ll be playing. Or where he may have committed the murder or with what, for that matter.

Also said to be in talks to join the project are the writers of Deadpool, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, with Deadline suggesting the movie will be a vehicle for Reynolds and be “based on the mythology of the venerable board game”. Ah, yes, that deep Cluedo lore.

The live-action movie will be the first Cluedo adaptation for the big screen since the cult 1985 film starring Tim Curry and Christopher Lloyd, which was written by Blues Brothers and American Werewolf in London director John Landis. Sticking to the whodunit format of the game, Clue was notable for having three different endings that differed between cinemas.

A remake of the film was originally rumoured a couple of years ago, following the collapse in 2011 of another Cluedo movie with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski attached.

The latest attempt follows a surprisingly notable 12 months for the post-World War II family favourite, after it was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame and even turned into a comic book.
