Original game raised $2 million on crowdfunding platform in 2013
A revised reprint of a co-operative horror board game is on track to become the most funded campaign in the history of crowdfunding site Kickstarter.
Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5 is an improved version of the title originally funded on Kickstarter in 2013 to the tune of just over $2 million (£1.6m).
The game is set in a nightmarish world where humans fight for their lives against a variety of monstrous creatures. Players equip weapons and items and move around a grid-based game board to fight against all sorts of terrible beings.
Inside the core box (which weighs a hefty 7.7kg) comes a 232-page rulebook, 17 sprues full of miniatures and over 1000 cards. Bumping this up is a number of expansions, stretch goals and add-ons for the game which, given its momentum so far, look sure to be achieved.
Since the campaign for Monster 1.5 was launched on November 25th, it has already attracted over $5.1 million (£4.1m) in funding. Its initial target of $100,000 (£80,442) was surpassed in just two hours, and $4.3 million (£3.5m) was raised in the first 24 hours.
Based on the initial response, Kickstarter analytics tool Kicktraq currently believes the game will raise more than $56.2 million (£45.2m) by the time its campaign closes on January 7th 2017 – almost triple the $20.3 million (£16.3m) raised by Kickstarter’s current most-funded project, the Pebble Time smartwatch.
At the moment, the most successful Kickstarter for a tabletop title remains Exploding Kittens, which raised $8.8 million (£7.1m).
An upgrade pack to convert an original copy of Kingdom Death is $60 (£48), with the standalone core game set at $250 (£201). That’s with shipping not included – and you can bet a nearly 8kg package is going to rack up the postage.
The core game is predicted for release in Summer 2017, with additional expansions and add-ons planned up to December 2020 and beyond as the campaign’s scale continues to expand.
