Star Wars: Destiny, Ex Libris and Azul also celebrated
This year’s Origins Awards have named their winners.
Following Scythe’s 2017 success at the prizes handed out by the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design since 1975 was big winner Gloomhaven, which picked up the accolade of Best Board Game of the Year to add to the legacy adventure game’s already heaving mantelpiece.
It was joined by fellow frontrunners Warhammer 40,000: Eighth Edition, crowned Best Miniatures of the Year, and Adventures in Middle-earth, with the Tolkien RPG named Best Roleplaying Game of the Year. Dungeons & Dragons’ tome Xanathar’s Guide to Everything collected the separate prize for Best Roleplaying Supplement of the Year.
Meanwhile, book-sorting gem Ex Libris collected the trophy for Best Card Game of the Year, while Spiel des Jahres hopeful Azul optimistically claimed Best Family Game of the Year.
The separate collectible game category was won by Star Wars: Destiny’s Awakenings set, seeing off competition from the Final Fantasy TCG, Pokémon and HeroClix, among others.
Origins also hands out an award for the best gaming accessories of the year, bestowed upon The Broken Meeple’s organiser for Terraforming Mars.
