Co-op game set after events of PS4 exclusive will be canon
PlayStation 4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn is the latest video game to make the leap onto the tabletop, with the announcement of an official board game.
Behind the upcoming adaptation is Steamforged, the Guild Ball miniatures studio previously responsible for reimagining two big video games as board games: Dark Souls, which also got a card game spin-off, and Resident Evil 2.
One of the most interesting aspects of Horizon Zero Dawn: The Board Game is that the game is apparently part of the universe’s official canon, with the events depicted on the tabletop taking place after the video game and its DLC expansions, according to IGN.
The game is co-op, and involves players hunting the cyber-creatures of the sci-fi world in a series of increasingly more difficult expeditions. Like Dark Souls, a multi-hour playthrough ends with a confrontation with a big baddie that players have (hopefully) improved their characters’ skills and equipment in order to take down.
“As huge Horizon Zero Dawn fans, we could not be more excited to be given the honour of developing a board game which will allow fans to explore this incredible world in a new and unique way,” said creative director Mat Hart.
“Many of the staff at Steamforged have been in love with Horizon Zero Dawn since it was first released, and so have an intimate understanding of what makes it so appealing and enthralling. With this game we’re going to give players a compelling new way to play and experience this amazing video game.”
Although Horizon Zero Dawn is Steamforged’s latest video game project to be unveiled, it’s actually been in development for a number of years, having begun life before the PS4 game was released. It will be headed to Kickstarter later this year, accompanied by the typical slew of impressive-looking miniatures.
