From Fruit Ninja, Jetpack Joyride and Vikings Gone Wild studio
Mobile tower defence series Kingdom Rush is being spun out into an upcoming board game.
First released as a browser game in 2011 before making the leap to iOS, Android and PC, Kingdom Rush sees players deploying towers and troops to fend off waves of approaching enemies.
The original app has been followed by three sequels: Frontiers, Origins and Vengeance, which was released late last year.
Kingdom Rush: Rift in Time, the first board game based on the series, will stick to the proven tower defence formula. Players work together to command heroes and construct towers set on polyomino tiles in order to attack the horde of foes.
The first description of the game mentions the need to pass towers between players to upgrade them, as portals on the map cause towers to warp between realms.
There’s mention of a campaign with increasingly challenging scenarios and the introduction of new enemy types, events and bosses – potentially hinting at a Mechs vs. Minions progression style.
Legend of Korra: Pro-Bending Arena creators Sen-Foong Lim and Jessey Wright have been joined by first-time designer Helana Hope to develop Rift in Time’s gameplay.
Publishing the spin-off will be Lucky Duck Games, which previously put out tabletop versions of mobile hits Fruit Ninja, Jetpack Joyride and Vikings Gone Wild – as well as the app-powered mystery-solving gem Chronicles of Crime.
Kingdom Rush: Rift in Time will land on Kickstarter on April 9th, ahead of a planned release in 2020.
