Black Lotus and other rare Unlimited and Alpha Edition cards taken from The Comic Hunter last week
A Canadian comic book shop was robbed last week, and among the items stolen was one of the most valuable Magic: The Gathering cards in existence.
In the early hours of Friday, October 14th, a lone thief broke into The Comic Hunter and stole a number of items, including multiple Magic cards.
Included in the loot was an Unlimited Edition Black Lotus, a second edition of one of the most valuable Magic cards ever produced.
To give you an idea of how rare the card is, a first edition of the Black Lotus sold for nearly $30,000 a few years back and the current going price of the Unlimited Edition card is anywhere between $3,500 for a heavily played version to upwards of $8,000 for a near mint copy.
Other Magic cards taken include the similarly valuable Unlimited Edition Mox Pearl, costing between $750 and $1,300; an Alpha Edition Zombie Master, worth around $400; an Unlimited Edition Mox Ruby worth roughly $1,000; an Unlimited Edition Beserk valued at around $100; and the rare Alpha Edition Wrath of God.
It means that the total value of the cards taken could be more than $10,000 – a serious blow to a local shop.
Comic Hunter released security camera footage of the thief, describing the burglar as roughly 5’5” to 5’8”, scrawny and dressed in a light-coloured hooded jacket.
Customers have come forward to show their support in the wake of the robbery – with one fan offering to pay $300 towards some of the cards stolen – while other local businesses have offered to donate some of their profits to the store.
