Untold: Adventures Await is a kid-friendly RPG powered by Rory’s Story Cubes

The team behind Rory’s Story Cubes has taken the wraps off its first roleplaying title powered by the popular storytelling game.

Untold: Adventures Await is the debut RPG powered by Story Cubes, which have been around since 2008 and encourage players to invent stories by rolling a series of dice decorated with various evocative icons and images.

Untold uses nine dice from any of the various Rory’s Story Cube Sets – which have included countless themed and licensed spin-offs including Doctor Who, Scooby-Doo, Batman, Looney Tunes and Adventure Time – to create hour-long scenarios referred to as ‘episodes’.

“You can be a character in a Batman story, you can be a character in a Doctor Who episode or, even weirder, you can have Finn and Jake team up with Scooby-Doo to battle The Joker by mixing all of the sets together,” co-designer and Story Cubes creator Rory O’Connor previously told Tabletop Gaming, adding that the game’s episodic format was inspired by ‘80s television series such as Star Trek and Quantum Leap.

Each episode is divided into a TV show-like structure, beginning with a danger scene to establish a threat, revealing a plot twist in the intrigue scene, introducing a villain during the confrontation and complicating things with a revelation before finally resolving things during the final showdown.

Episodes can be played as standalone adventures or connected together into an ongoing campaign, with adventure journal and hero sheets included in the box to track progression.

The £25 box will come with a set of nine Story Cubes, an episode board and scene tiles that hold the cubes in place during an episode. Reaction and player cards are also provided to help guide players through each escapade.

Untold has been designed by O’Connor alongside John Fiore, who previously created an unofficial set of rules for solo roleplaying title using Story Cubes called The Nine Cubes.

The RPG is currently up on Kickstarter, where it can be had for a fiver less than its planned RRP – although you’ll need to add £8 in postage. £28 gets you an extra Story Cubes set, while the Untold Ultimate Collection includes every Story Cubes release to date for £160.

Untold: Adventures Await will be out this October.
