Spire of Dioronna
We’re constantly keeping an eye on Kickstarter, for new and exciting projects that just need a few backers to really get going. However, in the case of Spire of Dioronna, which at the time of writing still has 15 days left on its campaign, there really isn’t a need for any extra support.
The 2 to 4 player title, which is described as a strategy experience with a modular design, was created by the Singapore-based Newqz Culture. While far-from a household name, the developers have previously created Crow Drinks Water, a party strategy title which wowed backers and once again broke its own targets.
Newqz Culture is thus back with Spire of Dioronna, an ambitious-looking title which boasts a Kickstarter page full of how-to-play demonstrations, stunning artwork, and heaps of player feedback. For those interested in backing the new game, there’s still some time left, and with a $29 early bird special and a $49 double pack offer, there are some great packages available.
3 Body Problem
Of course, it’s not just about following a crowd though; the title isn’t simply worth investing in because others have. It’s important to note that Spire of Dioronna actually takes its backstory from a familiar narrative. 3 Body Problem is a massive book series, and recently enjoyed success on streaming, but for this particular game the designers turned to the final book in the trilogy, The 3 Body Problem: Death's End by Liu Cixin.
In that novel, audiences are introduced to the titular Dioronna, a woman from the 15th century Byzantine Empire who used the high-dimensional fragment in an attempt to assassinate a powerful leader, only to fail and be executed for her crimes. It’s a compelling story, but one that plays into the background of this latest tale.
Spire of Dioronna is set in a wizarding school, where a secret slowly emerges. Students are intrigued by an urban legend concerning a terrible experiment that happened at the top of a strange tower. Players enter the tower to discover the truth, only to find themselves trapped in there. The mission is to escape, before it's too late.
Spire Of Dioronna Is Mechanically Breaking New Ground
Mechanically there is something unique about the modular nature of the title too. Players build their board with a series of map cards, with players hunting for specific sections in order to navigate the room successfully. With narrative cards depicting hats, cats and magical keys which can prove to be the path to victory, audiences should find that this simplistic system is easy to pick up.
Players are also given an outline of the map, the functions of each map card, and an overview of how these gorgeously designed elements all interact with one another. This is still a work in progress and developers are actively listening to feedback from players, but this is absolutely a project that you may want to get behind. The game is currently said to take 20 to 40 minutes to complete and is aimed at ages 8 and up.
It’s important to note that this is not an officially licensed game, but fans of 3 Body Problem will definitely find something to love! Players can check out the Kickstarter right now for more information, or head on over to the developer’s page to learn about the team behind the concept.
