Animal survival game Evolution is crawling out of the sea onto PC and mobile

Evolution, the card game where players take control of animals trying to adapt to survive extinction, is itself evolving into a new form: digital.

Publisher North Star Games has launched a Kickstarter to bring the unique 2014 title to PC and mobile, following an alpha test over the summer.

Evolution: The Video Game sticks closely to the gameplay of the tabletop version, with animals either dodging predators and searching out plants to eat while gaining new traits – or evolving into one of the hunting carnivores and taking down smaller prey.

The app has been in development for two and a half years, with the team bringing the cardplay to life with animations and some great-looking visuals.

Interestingly, while the original card game took around an hour to play through, the technological enhancements mean that the app can apparently finish a match in 10 minutes, significantly cutting down the time needed to play.

There will be both single-player and multiplayer modes included, with the single-player including showdowns against AI with varying strategies and a challenge-based campaign mode.

Meanwhile, the online multiplayer will allow players to match up based on their skill level, with PC and mobile users able to play against each other.

The crowdfunding campaign is currently at just over half of its $40,000 target with a month and a bit left to run. The iOS and Android app costs $10 (£8), with the PC and Mac edition a little more at $15 (£11).

A beta for the PC version will launch next month, with a tablet test following in November before phones join the mix in February 2018. The game’s full release is currently planned for next spring.
