Batman, Harry Potter and Rick and Morty enter the Funkoverse in the Funko Pop! board game

Funko’s Pop! Vinyl figures – the line of collectible models based on every bit of pop culture you can imagine – are getting their own board game, with Batman, Harry Potter and Rick and Morty characters among the first of what’s sure to be many, many, many sets.

The Funkoverse Strategy Game, to give it its full title, is the first board game from the new Funko Games label. Funko previously picked up Forrest-Pruzan Creative, the team that created very decent pop culture games such as Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle, Disney Villainous and the recent Jaws under the designer name Prospero Hall – so don’t write off the Funko game just yet, cynics.

Funkoverse is a scenario-based game that uses actual Funko Pop! models on the board. Players move and use their characters’ abilities each turn to earn the most victory points, with more powerful skills taking longer to recharge after use via the game’s cooldown system.

All of the characters are said to be completely different (something it has in common with Villainous), hopefully meaning there’ll be plenty of reason to play multiple times as different characters. Two to four people can play, with scenarios taking between 20 minutes and an hour.

Although the game uses Funko Pop! figures, you can’t just break out your existing collection and starting playing. The Pop! Vinyl in the game are brand new three-inch models that are exclusive to Funkoverse.

The first wave of Funkoverse sets, which will be released this October, will include DC Comics, Harry Potter, Rick and Morty, and The Golden Girls.

Among the characters we spotted in the first images of the game are Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange and Voldemort for Harry Potter and Batman, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Batgirl and Robin for DC Comics (hold on, Superman fans), while the Rick and Morty set seems to be a head-to-head duel between the two.

The sets will come with four different scenarios and either four or two characters from each pop culture franchise, all of which can be played as standalone games or mixed together in any combination – so if you’ve ever wanted Batman to face off against Voldemort, here’s your chance.
