What in the Nine Hells
Dungeons & Dragons’s fifth edition is headed back to one of its most iconic locations, Baldur’s Gate, in the RPG’s next adventure and a new expansion for card game Dungeon Mayhem.
Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus takes place in the Sword Coast city popularised by the nineties PC game series and previously explored in past supplements and sourcebooks for the tabletop roleplaying game, but also goes beyond the walls of Baldur’s Gate to enter the first layer of the Nine Hells, Avernus. The first details of the plot mention exploring the frontlines of the Blood War and a confrontation with the archdevil Zariel.
The adventure is designed to take first-level player characters up to level 13, and will also introduce new fifth-edition rules for war machines and ‘devil’s deals’ that can present tempting offers of strength and wealth for dungeon masters to offer players – presumably with the potential of dark repercussions.
The 256-page book has been developed by D&D’s lead story designer Chris Perkins, and will be released on September 17th in both a standard edition and an alternative front cover, which will be available only in game shops.
Baldur’s Gate will also be explored in the first expansion for fast-paced party card game Dungeon Mayhem, Battle for Baldur’s Gate. The expansion will introduce two characters from the Baldur’s Gate video games – ranger Minsc (who comes with his hamster companion Boo) and the transforming druid Jaheria – with their respective decks. Artist Jake Parker takes over illustration duties for the expansion from original Dungeon Mayhem artist Kyle Ferrin.
Battle for Baldur’s Gate will be released alongside Descent into Avernus on September 17th.
