Betrayal and backstabbing abound in social deduction game from Clank! makers

There’s a new Game of Thrones board game on the way and – shocker – it’s full of betrayal, backstabbing and bloodshed. Just another day in Westeros, eh?

Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker is coming out of Dire Wolf, the studio behind deckbuilding card game Clank! It will launch this spring alongside the eighth and final season of the TV show based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire books, which begins airing in April.

Oathbreaker leans into the political intrigue and treachery of the world, with five to eight players controlling members of Westeros’ various houses: Stark, Lannister, Tyrell, Baratheon, Targaryen and so on.

One player takes a place on the Iron Throne as the king – everyone else must plot to earn their favour, gaining the power necessary to destroy their rivals.

The social deduction gameplay involves loyalists and conspirators working against each other, with players attempting to work out who’s on their side – and who has a hidden agenda.

Oathbreaker features a dozen characters from the TV series represented by screenshots; the first images of the game show Ned Stark, Littlefinger, Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark and Olenna Tyrell caught up in the mix.

Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker will be out this spring in the US, where it’ll cost $35 (£27). Playing time is around half an hour to 45 minutes – giving you plenty of time to patch up those friendships you'll inevitably ruin in your rise to the throne.
