In-person AND online, could this be the best of both worlds?
Gen Con is one of the largest tabletop conventions and was due to take place in August in Indianapolis from 5th-8th. However, today it announces a short postponement, moving the event to September 16th-19th 2021.
This is in order to meet the challenges of the moment - though not specified, it is unlikely to be in reference to anything other than COVID-19 – which allows them to offer a range of flexible opportunities to get involved. This means people can attend the show physically, with capped attendance and a modified format, at home through Gen Con online events, which will include live streaming, remote events, and community on discord, and also at friendly local game stores through Pop Up Gen Con conventions, where publishers games will be available to stores for demos, events and purchases. Each of these must meet public health guidelines where possible, and priority for in-person attendance will go to those ticket holders of 2020 who had their ticket rolled over.
It comments that convention planning is completed on a long timeline, and they appreciate patience amidst murky waters. Indeed, our own tabletop event, Tabletop Gaming Live, has recently been announced as cancelled, based on the anticipated structure and event that would be created, with as much advanced warning as possible.
Co-owner and chairperson Peter Adkinson said of the Gen Con restructure and postponement "Gaming is changing, and so are we. This will be a Gen Con unlike any other, and the way we emerge from this period of tragedy will carry us into a new future for Gen Con and the hobby we share and love."
Ticket holders who can no longer attend can roll over to the 2022 convention, or have their payment returned as a credit for future actions, or refunded with a 5% processing fee.
