Steamforged Games are well known for their video game to tabletop conversions, from Resident Evil, to Dark Souls, to Monster Hunter World and more – yet it's back to the world of post-apocalyptic machine rule with a return to Horizon Zero Dawn. This time, it's within the video game's successful follow up, Horizon Forbidden West, that we hear of the news of the new board game Kickstarter: Seeds of Rebellion.
What is Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West?
Horizon Zero Dawn was a successful Playstation 4 (and later Windows) game that followed Aloy, a hunter seeking to discover more about her past, in a post apocalyptic world of machines of all sizes. Instead of a Terminator-esque existence however, you'd be much more likely to find huge mechanical creatures that you'd loot for parts to upgrade things like your own weapons, or could hack their electricals for additional options. As a large open world game, it was praised for its ideas and lush graphics, in a world that has been overun by nature and by machines. In February 2022, its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West was released, seeking the source of a plague that has infected their world.
Is Horizon Zero Dawn a Board Game?
Though it launched on digital platforms, Steamforged Games created their board game in 2020, focussing on the same story of the game, as a semi-cooperative tactical action game. The game included a number of miniatures to capture the imagery of the original digital game, with mechanics our reviewer described as being improved from the earlier Steamforged Games' Dark Souls Board Game. From there, there have been nine additional expansions and additional extras, ranging from adding new enemies to hunt, to adding aspects like bandit events and encounters.
What do we know about Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion?
The game is a 1-4 player fully cooperative, narrative-driven experience that builds on the same mechanics originally used in Horizon Zero Dawn board game. The tale sees you exploring the deadly Forbidden West before Aloy's arrival in it, in which the territory is ruled by the tribe Tenakth, currently united but soon to be facing rebellion, which threatens the peace held between the clans. Players will investigate and fight the threat to prevent such disruption, amidst the landscape of machine overrule.
The narrative aspect sets Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion apart from its predecessor, which will also be fully canonical.
"With new machines come new gameplay mechanics. Each new machine has been under a microscope, and we’ve engineered a huge variety of new behaviours, encounters, and challenges for you to overcome when facing down the machines of the Forbidden West" Fraser McFetridge, Lead Designer for the game said in a behind the scenes post.
The game will also be backwards compatible – something you'd usually only hear over console generations – in that you can encounter miniatures from the existing Horizon Zero Dawn collection, using a free compatibility pack for returning backers. This means that Thunderjaws and Oseram delvers can be used across both games.
When and where can I get Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion?
The game will be going to Kickstarter on 21st November, and the project page is available to register for launch notification. Prices and pledge levels have yet to be released, though for some potential indication, the original Horizon Zero Dawn: The Board Game was released with a base pledge of £100. You can read more about the project in the coming weeks on the Steamforged Blog.
