Magic: The Gathering commentator trolls Las Vegas GP stream with black Lotus opening

Magic: The Gathering fans watching last weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix almost certainly didn’t expect one of the tournament’s commentators to attempt to find one of the CCG’s rarest cards live on air. They definitely didn’t expect what happened next.

“I want to see if I can open a Black Lotus live on stream,” Rich Hagon suddenly announced to co-hosts Gaby Spartz and Luis Scott-Vargas.

For those not in the know, Black Lotus is one of – if not the – most valuable and hard-to-find Magic cards in existence, potentially worth thousands at auction depending on the version – the Alpha deck edition can sell for tens of thousands.

It is also a card that was only ever printed in three sets, the last being Unlimited Edition in December 1993. So it seemed just a tad unlikely that Hagon would be able to pull one from a booster 25 years later.

But lo and behold, seconds later Hagon is excitedly shouting: “I’ve done it, I’ve done it! It’s a black Lotus! Oh my God!”

And it was, but instead of being the prized Magic card, it was a sealed black 2014 Lotus Exige Hot Wheels car: in other words, a black Lotus instead of a Black Lotus.

“I’m going to open it,” he breathlessly tells a clearly corpsing Spartz while tearing open the packet, while Scott-Vargas remains stone-faced, staring directly into the camera. “0 to 60 in 2.4 seconds.”

It’s a silly joke, but Hagon’s enthusiastic selling of the gag even gets Scott-Vargas to eventually crack a slight smile.
