Mice & Mystics could be the next board game to get the big-screen treatment, as Variety reports that DreamWorks is in the final stages of agreeing to turn Jerry Hawthorne’s fantasy dungeon-crawler into an animated film.

Hawthorne’s 2012 roleplaying-lite hit follows a group of adventurers who are transformed into mice and work together to save their kingdom from evildoer Vanestra. As you’d expect, they’re pursued throughout the castle by various predators, most notoriously the relentless cat Brodie.

Attached to direct the film is Alexandre Aja, the horror filmmaker behind the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, Horns, Piranha 3D and Switchblade Romance. Joining him to pen the script is Aquaman, The Conjuring 2 and Wrath of the Titans writer David Leslie Johnson.

As the deal is yet to be fully finalised, there’s no word on when - or even if - the Mice & Mystics movie might see a release. However, it joins a growing list of board game films in the works, including Catan, Dungeons & Dragons, Cluedo and whatever Fantasy Flight is cooking up in its Entertainment division.
