DOTTED GAMES
Here at Tabletop Gaming Magazine, we’ve been closely following the developments made by Dotted Games, the board game brand which was born of the collaboration between LEGO and Asmodee. With the former known for its unique brick-building products and the latter famous for its inventive tabletop titles, the partnership always seemed like a match made in heaven.
And just like those LEGO bricks, these companies really clicked, demonstrating just how much potential there was in this team-up with the launch of Monkey Palace. This first release from Dotted Games proved itself to be a valiant seller for the brands, and it’s no surprise that the duo are back with another big idea.
On January 7th, 2025, Asmodee and LEGO produced a joint statement looking ahead to August 1st of the same year. On that day, a new creation goes on sale: Brick Like This! Pitched as a party title, fans will be able to get their first-look at the concept at the January Toy Fairs taking place in London and Nuremberg, before having the opportunity to purchase it at August’s Gen Con. But what do we know about Brick Like This! Well, it’s not an entirely original idea.
A Brick Party to Brick Like This!
In the official press release, LEGO and Asmodee note the contributions of game designer Luca Bellini, known for such creations as Jungle Brunch, Fun Farm, and most notably, Brick Party. That final mention is where LEGO and Asmodee are taking their inspiration from, and while they promise their own iteration will be a reimagining of the first, it is still worth noting that the title will not be quite as original as Monkey Palace was.
In 2015’s Brick Party, which featured up to 9 players and encouraged team-based battle, competitors were tasked with navigating a series of rounds each boasting a different special rule and partner from the last. Players were required to build shapes with their bricks as fast as they could, while adhering to the changing guidelines. Building with a blindfold on, or with one hand behind your back, were just some of the basic commands.
There are plenty of natural connections to be made between Brick Party and the LEGO brand, and it’s easy to see how this premise may cross over with what Dotted Games is attempting to build. But details are still thin on the ground as to how the company may ideate methods of variation between the old and the new.
LEGO Brick Like This!
Nonetheless, Brick Like This! appears to be an exciting project for Dotted Games, and one that suggests that the company could continue to repurpose existing titles in the future.
The official Brick Like This! synopsis does give an indication of the vision of the developers, with the description saying that “Brick Like This! is a fun family party game where teams race to finish their LEGO models. One teammate describes a LEGO model while the other teammate builds it. Communication and collaboration are key in this fun and fast-talking LEGO building party game!” The game is for 2-8 players for ages 7+.
We’re still waiting on confirmation of what price this game will retail at, but we’ll keep you up to date on all the latest developments concerning Brick Like This! and Dotted Games’ future, here at Tabletop Gaming Magazine. Make sure to check out coverage of those previously mentioned Toy Fairs to get a preview of what’s to come, in what’s promised to be an accessible and fun party title for the whole family.
