Straight from the Norse’s mouth
PC real-time strategy game Northgard is getting a board game adaptation, its creators have announced.
Northgard: Uncharted Lands has been designed by Moai creator Adrian Dinu and is described as being a blend of deckbuild cardplay, resource management and exploration based on the original computer game’s challenge of leading a Viking clan.
As in the PC game, each player controls a different clan of Viking warriors and settlers, expanding their settlement while jostling with their neighbours, battling creatures from Norse myth and ensuring they survive harsh winters by stockpiling food.
Exploring, fighting and gaining territory rewards fame – aka victory points – with players using their hand of cards to decide what to do. The deckbuilding elements comes in at the end of each turn, when they can develop their clan’s technologies and strategies to add a card to their personal deck for future use.
Uncharted Lands is said to play quickly, with a focus on a streamlined set of rules to recreate the real-time flow of the PC game. Interestingly, the board game’s speed is controlled by the players, with a set number of fame points or number of territories containing particular buildings bringing things to an end in around an hour and a half with two to five people.
Northgard: Uncharted Lands will get a Kickstarter campaign this autumn, ahead of a presumable release in 2020.
