Other winners included Warhammer 40,000, Mystic Vale and kid-friendly RPG No Thank You, Evil!

Jamey Stegmaier’s alternate-history, mech-battling strategy epic Scythe has picked up another honour to add to its already lengthy list of accolades.

The 2016 title was crowned Board Game of the Year at this year’s Origins Awards, seeing off competition from Star Wars: Rebellion, Blood Rage, A Feast for Odin, Mansions of Madness: Second Edition, Terraforming Mars and Clank!, among others.

Origins’ awards show has been hosted by The Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design at the US games fair since 1975 and has previously recognised now-classics such as Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Diplomacy, Magic: The Gathering, Risk, Catan, Call of Cthulhu, Warhammer and Cosmic Encounter.

Other games to make the cut this year included fast-paced card game Happy Salmon, which won Family Game of the Year; the similarly kid-friendly No Thank You, Evil!, named RPG of the Year; and the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which was deemed the Best Collectible Card Game of the Year.

Miniatures Game of the Year was won by Warhammer 40,000 as its revised eighth edition launched, while Card Game of the Year was collected by Mystic Vale.

It wasn’t all games – accessory specialist The Broken Token’s wooden organiser for Blood Rage was celebrated as the Best Accessory of the Year.
