Mondo, the pop culture studio that made its tabletop debut last year with The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31, has cracked open the amber surrounding its next big movie board game.

Jurassic Park: The Chaos Gene is coming out later this year in time for the dino park movie’s 25th anniversary in 2019 and is described as being a dungeon-crawler with lots of miniatures.

There are four asymmetric factions in the game, including the human park visitors – Ian Malcolm, Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant, Lex and Tim – and InGen security staff, as well as the pack of raptors and T-Rex chasing them across Isla Nublar.

The action is based around various different scenarios and takes place on a modular board made up of environment tiles that players explore during each mission. Exploration is said to be the focus, but each player has unique objectives depending on the setup – the T-Rex’s being simply to eat everyone else.

Some of the dungeon-crawl gameplay elements include searching for items, gaining experience and customising the characters during each playthrough.

The characters also start with individual traits – the T-Rex moves fast and can roar to disrupt its prey’s movement, the raptors can communicate and discover weaknesses in the park’s security, the InGen staff are focused on resource management and the iconic park visitors each have a unique talent based on their specialism.

“In our approach to Jurassic Park: The Chaos Gene, we took many of our favourite elements of a traditional dungeon-crawl-style board game and spliced them with one of our favourite films of all time,” Mondo creative director Luke Byers commented. “The goal was to create something truly unique and incredibly fun to play.”

The Chaos Gene is set to break free this autumn. As with Mondo's release of Infection at Outpost 31, there's no hint of a Kickstarter campaign in sight.
