The Dungeons & Dragons movie has a release date

The upcoming Dungeons & Dragons film finally has a release date – but you’ll be waiting a little while to see what’s in store.

The latest big screen crack at the fantasy roleplaying game will be out on July 23rd 2021, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

It’ll be the first adaptation of the iconic RPG to land in cinemas since the poorly received 2000 effort that, oddly, included appearances from The Crystal Maze’s Richard O’Brien and Doctor Who Tom Baker, as well as performances from Jeremy Irons and Scary Movie star Marlon Wayans.

Two straight-to-TV movies, Wrath of the Dragon God and The Book of Vile Darkness, were subsequently released in 2005 and 2012 on the SyFy channel.

After legal complications about the film rights to the game, the upcoming D&D movie began life a few years ago at Batman studio Warner Bros and was confirmed to take place in the Forgotten Realms, with a script by the writer of Wrath of the Titans and one of the producers of The Lego Movie and How to Train Your Dragon attached.

Last year, Baby Driver and The Fault in Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort was said to be in discussions about starring in the movie, with Goosebumps director Rob Letterman at the helm.

All of this is now back up in the air, however, as it’s been confirmed that the film has jumped ship from Warner Bros to Paramount, which also handles Hasbro’s Transformers spin-offs.
