Awww, the Emperor

The grimdark 41st millennium is plagued by violence, genocide, corruption, war and disease, but that doesn’t mean the heavily-armoured, take-no-prisoners warriors of Warhammer 40,000’s Space Marines can’t look cute.

Games Workshop’s sci-fi miniatures game is the latest universe to be grabbed by the ubiquitous reach of Funko Pop!, the line of vinyl figurines that turns pop culture icons into doe-eyed models with inflated heads and exaggerated features.

Everything from Fortnite and Spider-Man to Game of Thrones and American Horror Story has been Funko-ified – seriously, there are hundreds of these things – and now Warhammer 40,000 is no exception.

Games Workshop and Funko have teamed up to turn four Space Marine Chapters into Pop! figures, something described as just the “first wave” of a Warhammer 40,000 range of models.

To start your Pop! vinyl collection (or satiate your ongoing obsession), you’ll be able to grab an Ultramarines Intercessor, Blood Angels Assault Marine, Dark Angels Veteran and Space Wolves Pack Leader.

Although they clearly have the distinctive style of Funko figures, the Space Marines have been designed by artist Sarah Kaiser to stay true to the lore and visuals of Warhammer 40,000.

“To evoke the Warhammer 40,000 aesthetic, little of the detail could be sacrificed for the sake of simplicity,” Kaiser wrote in a blog post. “Instead, extra care was paid to extrapolating the same chunky treatment of the Funko Pop! look to the armour plates themselves. Everything, right down to the fingers on their hands and the rivets on their guns, would need to match the same ‘shape language’ to keep them looking coherent while maintaining their own identity.”

The Warhammer 40,000 Funko Pop! Space Marine figurines are due for release ‘soon’, following their release at London’s Toy Fair this week. In the meantime, you can watch a teaser trailer for the first wave of figures below:
