Warband, meet broadband
Games Workshop’s next stab at conquering the digital realm will be a PC version of its slick skirmish board game Warhammer Underworlds.
Warhammer Underworlds: Online will bring the gameplay and gloomy Mirrored City setting of 2017’s Shadespire and last year’s follow-up Nightvault to PC, faithfully recreating the mash-up of deckbuilding and dice-chucking that powered the tabletop games.
As in the previous Warhammer Underworlds games, Warhammer Underworlds: Online will focus on small groups of figures known as warbands as they go head-to-head in tight-knit arena environments.
Players’ customisation of their warband by crafting their objective deck – which drives their overall strategy, from aggressive combat to defensive play – and power deck, which enables other actions and upgrades for the characters, will similarly be a major part of the upcoming app. The decks can be built from both faction-specific cards and universal cards that can be used by any warband.
Developer Steel Sky Productions has confirmed that Warhammer Underworlds: Online will launch into Early Access on Steam later this year, arriving with two warbands.
More cards and warbands are confirmed to be in the works for future updates, although the app’s creators have said that the factions won’t be released for the PC game in the same order as they were added to the original board games.
Going by the first trailer for the game, one of the warbands may – or may not be – Steelheart’s Champions. Take a look for yourself below.
